Out of a total of six conductors just three have accounted for all but five years of its existence. George E.Stead conducted the Choir for 46 years until his unexpected death in 1968, and led the Choir to astonishing success in major choral competitions. At the prestigious Llangollen International Eisteddfod there came a hat-trick of wins in the early sixties. The choir almost replicated this some three decades later with two consecutive wins and a second place under the leadership of the present Musical Director, Thom Meredith. More recent major success has been achieved at the biennial Cornwall International Male Choral Festival with two wins and two second places in just five competitive visits between 2005 and 2019.
Nearer to home, at the local Mrs Sunderland Music Festival there has been a record number of fifty first prizes.
Overseas concert tours have included separate exchange visits with German choirs in Essen, Solingen and Overath, also Czechoslovakia. Two visits to Huddersfield’s French twin town, Besançon saw also performances in Chartres and Rouen Cathedrals. A hectic nine concerts in fourteen days were performed whilst travelling throughout California, USA and included an open-air concert in Disneyland.
